Rules that need to be followed
- Liquids in your carry-on luggage need to be under 100ml.
- They also need to be in a separate clear bag.
- Don't have anything sharp such as scissors or a metal nail file in your carry-on luggage.
Dress the part
- Avoid wearing anything that will set the sensors off. Wear simple jewellery and avoid boots as they usually have metal.
- Opt for a hoodie instead of a jacket with a zipper.
- Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off as you will likely have to remove them.
- The temperature on planes is unpredictable. Bring a jacket and wear long pants if you can. If you are travelling to a warm climate, bring light clothes to change into.
Know what's in your bag
- Keep all your iffy items (liquids and electronics) and important items (passport, boarding pass, medications) at the top of your bag.
- Make sure you have a doctors letter explaining what medications you are on. Ensure the medications are in their boxes and are packed together.
Don't be scared or stressed out
- Customs officials will be attracted to you if you display signs of nervousness.
- Remind yourself that you are simply boarding a plane, therefore have nothing to worry about.
- If you are asked to open your bags or have a pat down, it's okay. This is routine as officials need to meet a number of random checks every hour.
- Always be polite, even if you feel you are being treated unfairly. They are just doing their job and you will not help yourself by being rude.
